Dessen bekannteste Komödie, Die Deutschen Kleinstädter, stand übrigens auch für Gogols Revisor Pate. Trotz solcher deutlich erkennbarer Einflüsse ist Gogols Stück aber innovativ. Er verbindet erstmals und in dieser Form einmalig die satirische Beamtenkomödie mit einer Form der Verwechslungskomödie, die sich auf Molière zurückverfolgen läßt.
